So today, I want to talk about how to stay fit and healthy while travelling…
I know many of you guys spend a lot of time out of the country (for both work and play) and get stressed about how to stick to the workout and nutrition goals you’ve been working so hard on.
You have an angel on one shoulder telling you to pick the healthy options and to check out the gym, and the devil on the other telling you to eat and drink as much as possible as after all, you’re on holiday!
It’s TOUGH! I still don’t have it totally nailed.
If anyone’s ever seen me at a buffet, it ain’t pretty! Oh great, I can have a side order of ice cream with my omelette at breakfast. Why not?! Nutella on every baked item I can get my mitts on. Perfect!
I’m not even joking.
How many times have you gone on holiday and spent 7 days stuffing yourself silly, sat on your bum for the duration and come back feeling like you’ve literally been run over by a cruise ship?!
^^^ Yep, I thought so! ^^^
Ok, so let’s look at my 5 TOP TIPS for staying on track whilst still enjoying your adventures…
- Pack Your Own Snacks
Admittedly, airport and airline food is getting better. However, it’s still pretty unpredictable. Peanuts, pretzels and suspicious looking “chicken or beef” is still the order of the day for most.
So what should you take with you? Think convenience food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Protein bars, sliced raw veggies, home-made granola, biltong, protein shakes, fruit, nuts and seeds are all great options. How about making these tasty little protein bars from Jessipes? Easy to make, easy to store, travel friendly and nutritionally brilliant, they will fill a gap when your tummy starts to grumble.
I wouldn’t of course, suggest that you eat a whole days worth of food in convenience snacks. However, when the choice is either bad or worse, they will help fill in the gaps until you reach your destination and can get a proper meal.
- Plan Ahead
If you know where you’re going to be eating, then check out the menu before you go. This means you can plan ahead. The trick is then to stick to it! Avoid that snap decision to immerse yourself in a bowl of pasta as large as your head just because you’re starving by the time you come to sit down. Unless of course, you really want that bowl of pasta as big as your head. In which case, go for it and enjoy it – without the guilty feeling of regret afterwards 🙂
- Take Your Supplements
*** THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! ***
First question, do you use supplements? Second question, if not – why not?! I supplement every single day with the best quality vitamins in the world. When I’m traveling however, it becomes even more integral to do so. Chances are that no matter how well I try and eat I won’t be nourishing my body as much as I would at home. Add to this a bit of jet lag and a sprinkling of alcohol and my body will be craving the nutrients, vitamins and minerals more than ever.
I always make sure I pack my USANA health pack (handy little travel packets which contain my daily requirements of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants) digestive enzymes, probiotics and melatonin (to help with jet lag.)
This simple step will ensure that my body continues to perform and function optimally regardless of where I am in the world.

- Travel Workouts
We’ve talked about these a lot in past emails. TABATA and HIIT are two of the options I utilise regularly. Another option is just enjoying the adventure of the unknown in the hotel gym. Get creative! There is always going to be something you can do to get a sweat on and keep your metabolism fired up. If all else fails, walk, run, skip, swim, jump or cycle outside and see it as more time to soak in your new surroundings.
- Indulge Wisely
Do you really want that bowl of nachos refilling or are you just eating them because they’re there? Do you really have room for that hot chocolate fudge cake and ice cream or are you simply having it because it’s your favourite?
Think before you order and pick wisely. If you’re going to feel guilty after eating it then maybe think twice. If you’re going to savour every mouthful and feel as happy as a pig in sh*t afterwards, then crack on and enjoy!
Remember, with both exercise and nutrition consistency is KEY.
However, it’s also important to remember that happiness and living comes FIRST. No, you may not come back from a week away with “gains” or abs or as lean as when you went. But you’ve had fun, seen a new place, spent time with loved ones and are happy and healthy.
Isn’t that the main thing?
Now pass me my pina colada…
