Today I want to talk protein powder.
Do you currently use a protein powder supplement?
Anyone that is currently training with me, or has in the past, will know that a good quality protein powder is the first thing I recommend they purchase when we start working together.
The first reason is that generally people aren’t eating enough protein per day. A protein shake is a quick and convenient way of increasing protein intake without spending hours in the kitchen or money on the meat counter.
Furthermore, after training with weights, it’s important to get protein to the muscles quickly in order to help repair and recover.
So how do you use it?
Protein powders are super versatile and can be used in numerous ways…
* Take a protein shake straight after exercise mixed with either water or milk (depending on your goals.) It’s quickly absorbed by the body and helps burn fat, repair muscles and prevent DOMS.
* Add a protein injection to your breakfast. Try adding a scoop to your regular smoothie or porridge or whisk a scoop with a banana and an egg and fry in coconut oil to make protein pancakes.
* Use it as a mid afternoon snack. Make a shake with either water, milk or nut milk and have alongside a piece of fruit and some nuts to keep the tummy rumbles at bay. Alternatively, mix a scoop into some greek yoghurt and chuck some berries and nuts on top along with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a snack full of goodness.
* Bake with it. Flapjacks, brownies, cakes, cookies and even truffles can be made with protein powder to make a healthier version of your favourite treats. Check out Instagram, Pinterest, or my bestie Jessie’s website www.jessipes.co.uk for inspiration.
So how do you pick which one to use?
When choosing a protein powder make sure to read the ingredients. Many of them are absolutely jam packed with artificial flavourings, sugar or sweetener. Look out for ones that have mostly natural ingredients and are free from fillers. After all, the reason for using protein powder is to give you a stronger, better recovered body. So why would you use one that could be detrimental to your health and ineffective?
